Highly hyped and anticipated last night was the airing of Kanye's short film named Runaway like the song he did with Pusha T at the MTV show a few weeks ago.
There's no denying Kanye's musical genius and how great of a producer and also a lyricist he is in my opinion. Obviously a man with such a talent and also ego has to create or expand his horizon and challenge himself in whatever he does so I wasn't really surprised that he would do some directing himself along with some help from Mr. Hype Williams who is a legend when it comes to music videos.
His mind has created a short film about a fallen phoenix that he tries to humanize and basically keep for himself but as we all know a phoenix shall rise from the ashes again and again.
Let's not go crazy with the analyzing of this piece. It has some beautiful images and some beautiful scenes but really it just doesn't qualify as a great short film at all. I got love for Kanye but it's definitely more hyped because it is done by Kanye and starring Kanye than the actual piece (kinda like the Facebook movie, more on that later). Yes, Kanye is not a movie director and yes, it's his first short film but this is just an attempt to be artsy and it falls short.
I did enjoy the opening scene with him driving in his fly whip and also the ballet scene but other than that I was just mostly excited to hear some of the new songs that plays during the movie in different scenes.
Have a look for yourself and make your own opinion. I liked the soundtrack not the movie. Kanye is first and foremost a musical artist and that's where he shines. Can't wait to hear the new album. A for effort and not so much for execution.
Kanye did star in another short film called We Were Once A Fairytale directed by someone who actually knows how to direct and even with fewer effects and money spent on the budget. This movie speaks more volumes than the Runaway short film. This is the huge difference between trying to be a movie director and actually being a movie director.
We Were Once A Fairytale directed by Spike Jonze and starring Kanye West.
Which one was your favorite?
